Rather than wait on a rematch with Jhonny Gonzalez as previously planned, it looks as though Abner Mares (26-1, 14KOs) will be moving up in weight to take on Japan's WBC super featherweight champion Takashi Miura (27-2-2, 20KOs).

The 28-year-old Mares, who lost his WBC featherweight title via shocking first round KO to Gonzalez last August, will be in pursuit of his fourth world title. The native of Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico has already captured world titles at bantamweight, junior featherweight, and featherweight.

Miura would be making the third defense of his world title. The hard-hitting native of Tokyo is 3-0 in recent bouts with Mexican fighters with a title-winning effort against Gamaliel Diaz and defenses over Sergio Thompson and Dante Jardon. Miura is also a former Japanese super featherweight champ.

Mares-Miura is being discussed for the undercard of Floyd Mayweather's next fight, May 3 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
